The Environment and Energy Council have met this week to discuss the 2030 Energy and Climate framework. In view of the upcoming March European Council, we urge EU Member States to embed CCS in their discussions on the Commission’s proposal. ZEP commends the effort from the European Commission and the European Parliament, and most recently the Green Growth Group ministers in calling for a 2030 domestic GHG reduction target of 40%, and the setting of a tighter ETS cap from 2021 as a first basis for discussions. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Graeme Sweeney, Chairman of the Zero Emissions Platform, said “ZEP notes that the proposed figure is in line with the range 40 to 44% GHG emission reduction by 2030 – which is indicated as necessary in the ‘Roadmap for moving to a competitive low carbon economy in 2050’ – albeit at the lower end."
